Released 1 year ago on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, Worms WMD arrives today on the Nintendo Switch.
Game and gameplay
This Worms opus went back to the basics of Worms, that is to say abandoning 3D and going back to 2D, which is a great idea! The game therefore puts us in charge of a small team of worms ready to do battle with a whole panoply of weapons, each more delusional than the next.
The game offers us several game modes, both solo and multiplayer, the single player has 5 different game modes. The first is training mode. This is used to discover the basics and mechanics of Worms (moving, using weapons, crafting, using vehicles, etc.). Even if you know Worms, it is useful to do this mode, because you can unlock little extras (helmets, victory dances, etc.).
The second mode is the campaign mode: “basic” game mode. The latter will offer many different challenges to complete, such as one of simply killing the opposing team, another of keeping a specific Worms alive, etc. There is a primary objective and several secondary objectives which are not mandatory, but add spice to the parts if you want to achieve them, while also bringing more experience at the end. These secondary objectives are very varied, they will ask to kill Worms in a certain way, to complete the level without losing a single one of your Worms, to have them all in a building ...
The third mode is the challenge mode. They are not unlocked from the base, it will be necessary to go through the levels of the campaign mode to find "wanted notices" which will allow them to be unlocked.
The fourth mode is the "extra" mode, which offers special missions in special levels, such as a castle, and so on.
And finally, the "bonus" mode, which offers some small additional "campaign" missions!
Now let's move on to multiplayer! Like a Mario Kart, this game mode is the ultimate friendship destroyer!
To begin with, it is possible to play both on a single console (online or locally!) Or with several consoles, as desired. Local or multi-console mode allows up to 6 teams to compete at the same time. These can either all have real players, or a single real player and bots, or 2-3 real players and the rest, bots. It is possible to play by passing the joystick or by each having their own personal joycon!
Then there is the online mode, which is divided into two sections, ranked games and unrated games. Both are played in 1 VS 1 against another player. It is possible to create your own personalized games, join one randomly or search for one in the list of games (having played before the title's release, the Online was not yet available. could not test it!)
The creation of parts is very complete. You can choose the setting, the type of level (a single large area, several islands, etc.), but also anything more "technical", such as the duration of a turn (in seconds), the duration of 'a round (in minutes), the starting health of all worms, fall damage, jet-pack fuel, whether or not the terrain can be destroyed, the arrangement of objects (mines, stationary weapons, etc. ) and many other things. In short, you can configure absolutely everything!
The game offers some new gameplay compared to other games. Thus, vehicles have made their appearances: our little worms will be able to take control of tanks, mesa and helicopters.
Another new feature is manufacturing, which is done directly in the game. This possibility allows you to obtain weapons and accessories that you do not have a base, or to make refills to reuse those you have completely used. To do this, it will be necessary to collect components, located in the many crates that appear throughout the game randomly in the levels. Each confection takes 1 turn to erect, so you will have to be a little strategic in your choices!
The rest of the game is classic, the team and worm customization is still present, the weapons and accessories are the same (the Holy Granada is still there!).
Graphics, sounds and optimization
Play on Switch is exactly the same as on other consoles. Whether in tablet mode or dock mode, the game is very beautiful and has no display concerns.
As far as sound goes, it's still the same as all Worms. The voices of the verses are always so delirious, the facial expressions are excellent.
And finally the optimization. The latter is onion. Docker or in tablet mode, the game has absolutely no problem. There is neither the slightest slowdown nor anything!
Conclusion
Worms WMD is a must have game for the Nintendo Switch. It is one of those games that lends itself perfectly to the concept of the console: to play anywhere, with anyone, alone or with others. The game offers plenty of hours of single player playtime alone, but if you get into multiplayer on top of that, that gives you virtually unlimited lifespan. Add to that taking the console everywhere and you can also play it anywhere, anytime with your friends.
As long as you like this style and genre of game, there's no need to think about it, jump on it!
