This Mean Warp – Hope Strikes Back

I like rogue-likes/lites that don't take too much hassle, that offer fun gameplay and a good dose of group fun. Today, I bring you a nice game that was released in mid-March called This Mean Warp. So, is it worth it? Or are we headed for disappointment?

Please note: this game is only available in English, although there is no large text to translate. A demo is also available, if necessary, on the title's Steam page.

History

Nothing simpler here. We are on a quest to fight the threat of the Norg Empire who just blew up a planet with their super weapon of death, and whose every message is an insult and a threat to you and your crew! Neither one nor two... we're going into the heap with our ship and our crew for justice!

Graphics & atmosphere

Here we have a pretty cool vibe with neat graphics. Well, ok... it's not ultra detailed or comparable to the latest news... but frankly? who would want that for this kind of game. Here, it passes cream and we are entitled to something really catchy with a soundtrack certainly not unforgettable but effective.

Gameplay

The game is divided into roles that will be based on the number of crew making up your team. Overall, it will be necessary to manage the guns, the repairs, the reloading of the ammunition, the bombs to be thrown and the one to be expelled, as well as the extinguisher for the fires. When you are alone, it comes down to managing everything according to your priorities.

But you can start with 4 by having enough players who want to play with you in multiplayer mode. Interestingly enough, the coordination will be the only one worth to succeed in surviving. Because your ship will have its maximum resistance reduced if you take too much unrepaired damage, despite all the bonuses you will find.

Each zone consists of different boxes which will be divided between different activities: combat, survival, timer, recovery, bosses, etc... and, each time, a chest box and an allied box (in solo, or in multiplayer below of 4). Survival will remain the most complicated in my opinion, because you will have to repair your ship non-stop, which will suffer repeated and ruthless attacks. At the end of each game, you will unlock, depending on your levels and achievements, new findable weapons, new defensive mods or even recruitable companions.

But over time and levels, you will have equipment that will help you, such as bots that will automatically repair every X seconds (depending on the bonuses applied and the rarity), or even a bot that will recharge you on the same principle as the repairer.

But in addition to the defensive modules that can return bombs or intercept shots, you will have a choice of a multitude of weapons that will be as powerful as they are varied. Laser cannon, ricochet cannon, ballista, sniper... each will have its own specificities to overcome the scoundrels, naughty and cruel Norgs who threaten you, you and freedom!

Summary

This Mean Warp is a game that can be played sporadically if desired. We like it or we don't like it, there will be no half measures, and it will also depend on the number of people who come to lend a hand. The merrier, the merrier...as long as they're well coordinated. For my part, I was taken in the trip by playing with several people, the time to get together for a part of a short hour of fun. You are not convinced ? Try the demo available on the Steam page to get an idea!
