Lies of P is one of the surprises of this gamescom. A game that I was absolutely not expecting and that blew me away with its story and its graphics. I'm not the only one, by the way, because the title was the most awarded of the show, winning three awards:
- Most Wanted Sony PlayStation Game
- Best Action Adventure Game
- Best Role-Playing Game
Of course, as it's a total surprise, I had no appointment scheduled to find out in the business area. So I rushed to the public stand on Saturday morning to get my hands on it. The press managers at NEOWIZ welcomed me with open arms. I entered the stand through a small door closed with a red curtain, to a large television allowing me to test the game on PlayStation 5.
Inspired by the story of Pinocchio, Lies of P is a souls-like taking you to the end of the XNUMXth century. We embody the puppet, engaged in a quest to win his humanity. Gepetto could help him but, unfortunately, the old man is nowhere to be found. Finding him will be the first step towards his new existence. As often in this style of game, the story holds a predominant place, with three different endings. A system of "lies" (hence the title) influences events, through a large network of quests. Pinocchio's progression is twofold. First thanks to its weapons which combine. Then, thanks to skills to be unlocked by changing parts of his body.
In the level that I was given to test, Pinocchio evolves in the streets of the city of Krat. The sets are of the same quality in-game as they are in the various videos shared recently. The light is very important, minimalist, without giving off a feeling of lack. In the shadows hover dogs and other enemies who do not hesitate to attack our hero as soon as they see him. The damage received is explosive. An error of judgment and his life goes downhill. This is also what struck me the most following this experience: the difficulty. And I don't have the impression that this is going to change much nor that options to make the whole thing more accessible are planned. In any case, this is what the press officer told me, to my great astonishment.
Then, I can't help but make the comparison with Steelrising. Both games share this same style of hero, a mechanical creature (Steelrising's heroine is an automaton). The common points do not stop there, if only by the genre and the magical universe supported by sublime graphics, even if the eras are different.
The game will be released in 2023 on PC and consoles. You can now follow the Steam page to not miss any future announcements:
