One of the two VR games that I was able to try during this Gamescom 2022 is called Drop Dead: The Cabin developed by Soul Assembly. I had a lot of apprehension for this game which promises to be a shooter/survival game in the woods. I thought it was a horror game that would put me on the knees... was it that bad? answer below.
History
You are two people who got lost in the woods and came across a seemingly abandoned house. Thinking you've found a good place to rest, you realize that the evil and totally smitten genius Dr. Monday owns the shack and shares it with his creations: distinctly hungry and equally ferocious zombies. Let's go, we're going to have our boots full!
Graphics
The game looks a bit like an Evil Dead in terms of atmosphere, for those who know the license and its hero: Ash. In fairly dark shades, we explore a very successful and fairly detailed environment, - in any case enough to find our way around, especially when we panic to find a weapon in an emergency with the eaters of human flesh who rush at us. In terms of the sound environment, I let you imagine how much you find yourself stressing or exulting depending on your "sensitivity" to this kind of game.
Gameplay
First of all, this game is designed for the Meta Quest 2 and therefore will not be usable with other VR tools.
Designed for two players, the game offers you a preparation phase that will give you the opportunity to find weapons and consumables to hold out against the horde that is preparing to descend on you. I tried for my first game a knife in one hand, a wooden bat in the other... but the joke is felt when one of my weapons breaks leaving me crestfallen and with a comment in mind " it's not true...".
Before finding the next weapon (a hatchet that will only last a few blows before breaking), I used everything and anything to make my work, like glass bottles for example. Firearms, more technical, will require to be reloaded manually with the right gestures: a weapon in one hand, the charger in the other... it's another thing to make reels with contending weapons.
Another interesting point, the random generation of levels, which will change the places of key objects and objectives, and which will force you to seek and put yourself in danger with each game. You will have to choose between doing the objectives together or covering your teammate while he slaloms between the enemies, a tough choice, but nevertheless vital for survival as coordination will be the key to your survival.
Conclusion
Drop Dead: The Cabin is a good game that has a good experience and solid gameplay. The fact that the parties change from one to another is a very good idea, but it is advisable to have a competent team member or else you will quickly despair. As long as you're not afraid of stressful situations and you like high voltage zombie games... this is for you. But if you prefer quieter games... I urge you to see another VR game that I tested: Hubris. Drop Dead: The Cabin is coming soon to Meta Quest 2.
