A while ago, Disgaea 6 was released on Nintendo Switch, today I offer you a little review of this game, following a license that has won over many players. So, is this game hell or hell?
Graphics & atmosphere
Might as well say it right away... it sucks at times. For this episode, we go over 3D and all that that implies in terms of performance. The limitation of characters and models is therefore rigorous, even if, visually, we feel that the license remains in his personal style. Whether in terms of scenery, characters, animation, it remains simple but effective most of the time. The world is certainly interesting, too bad that the maps are much too limited in size because it causes an impression of claustrophobia.
Music-wise, it's a bit of a dilemma. As much as the music isn't bad, it isn't exceptional either. We feel that efforts have been made, but we also don't have epic music that will stay in the head, or songs that will transcend everything. Unsurprisingly classic that does the job, but nothing more.
History
You mainly play as Zed, a basic zombie who explains to the assembly how he broke down the divine-destructor. You'll be backed up by a dog that was once a powerful mage, and a few forgettable sidekicks. To do this, you will have to go back to the beginning of your journey by explaining from the beginning how you went from a basic zombie to the unstoppable war machine that you have become.
Even if the story is not extraordinary, it remains pleasant and we always find this touch of humor and assumed shift that makes the success of the series. We take pleasure in following Zed and his interactions with characters that are sometimes as ridiculous as they are crazy.
Gameplay
The game offers us to do optional tutorials to teach us the basics by placing us directly with a Zed at the peak of its power and pulverizing each enemy with disconcerting ease. But quickly, we find the normal path and his character much weaker, and the learning of interesting mechanics.
In a kind of hub, we find all the services that will help us to make our character a champion: infernal assembly, hospital, refreshment bar, mission vortex, etc... which will be of paramount use to us. Soon enough, we will learn how to create sidekicks to help us. That's how I ended up with an army of useless prinny, so I could swing them at enemies and watch them explode. What happiness in perspective.
But where the fun stops is with the admittedly optional auto-combat feature that will almost always get the job done, far too well even in the more advanced modes like the item world. In addition to that, you will be able to increase the speed, which will allow you to chain the levels quickly to have objects / exp in mass without having to do anything. But let's start at the beginning!
Combat system
The fights will be turn-based, each character will be able to move, perform an action (attack, defend, throw, special action), and will have to do so taking into account the combo system implemented in the game. When you attack, you will benefit from the help of your allies against your enemy who will also inflict damage on them... a simple and effective way to hurt an enemy quickly.
But you will also have to pay attention to the colors of the floor. Because tiles will give you bonuses/penalties depending on their color. Although it is possible to change them, this represents a rather interesting and addictive tactical vision, because your choices will influence the game. And at the end of a fight, you will have items, exp which will be distributed between your characters and a portion at the refreshment bar, but we will talk about that later. This will allow you to equip your characters and earn them welcome levels.
Ultra reincarnation, refreshment bar and karma.
You will be able to create your companions at the infernal assembly, but also use ultra-reincarnation which will bring your character back to level 1, but by increasing his base stats significantly and giving you the possibility of acquiring quite powerful passives against karma. This is obtained mainly with personal missions and in good quantity. You will thus have fun quite quickly by transforming Zed into a seasoned fighter.
This is also the whole principle of the game, leveling up, reincarnating again and again, climbing again with advanced stats, and beating up everything you come across. So much so that after a while, the enemies will really be nothing more than a quick and pointless distraction.
The refreshment bar that will recover the exp of the fights will also allow you to increase the level of your units, among other equally useful possibilities such as increasing a class, etc... It will surely be up to you to do what you want with your characters and create the team you like. But let's be clear, past a point in the game, the difficulty will no longer be there.
Summary
This Disgaea opus is perhaps the one in the series that I liked the least. The changes made certainly offer some features that may appeal to new players, but may frustrate more than one with this "automatic" side and this disconcerting ease. In addition, the realization a little soft, the nice story but nothing more, and the gameplay although effective, will not come to save the furniture that much. It only remains to see what you are looking for in a game... Note that it is possible to activate special options that will give you facilities or rather difficult challenges.
You can find it on the Nintendo E-Shop.
