It's starting to be clear, the Marvel universe and me, it's a great love story. So when a new game on this universe comes out, inevitably, I can only run as quickly as Thor throws his lightning bolts.
So I wanted to present you a new Marvel game, Tournament of Champions, available on mobiles and tablets (iOS and Android). It is free-to-play, like many mobile games now, offering access to the game for free, but with in-game purchase options.
Scenario
The Collector, a character that fans of Marvel comics know well, as well as those who have seen recent films (see my article on the Marvel Cinematics Universe), decided to organize a galactic tournament, allowing two summoners, Kang and yourself, to assemble a team of champions who will compete against each other, to determine the winner, and especially the future of the galaxy. Yes, Kang is not really known for his philanthropic side.
Several series of quests are thus available, which are unlocked as you advance.
gameplay
Marvel Contest of Champions is a 1 on 1 fighting game, just like a Street Fighter. Or to draw an even more telling parallel, of an Injustice, recently released on mobile phones.
But the game is very accessible, even to novices of the genre, because there is no endless combo or key combinations to risk a stretch. Here, the controls are very simple, even simplistic some will say:
- a tap on the right to type
- we leave the finger pressed for a charged attack
- we slide from left to right or from right to left to move backwards or to charge
- and we tap on the left to ward off
Basic, yes, but it works quite well. In any case, for a mobile game. It is true that such simplicity could hardly be transposed to a classic fighting game, but the investment required for a mobile game is not necessarily the same.
However, each character benefits from a super-power gauge, which can be activated by pressing on it, triggering an overpowered attack.
A bit of RPG in it all
This Tournament of Champions would ring hollow, however, if it boiled down to fights only. Fortunately, the game has a small RPG component, which adds a certain charm to it. As much to say it, it is a little what makes its interest.
The goal of the game will therefore be to bring together a team of champions, whose skills and power you can develop as you progress, in particular thanks to iso-8, recovered by various means (generally as a reward). ).
Your Summoner level will also increase over time, allowing you to grow your team, have more energy, etc.
The game is therefore a kind of Pokemon in superhero sauce, where the goal will be to collect as many characters as possible (30 available) and to level them up.
Conclusion
At first glance, it must be admitted, the game is really beautiful (for a mobile game, of course). I did not expect characters so detailed and especially so respectful of the Marvel universe. I think the developers at Kabam must have been well briefed by the House of Ideas beforehand. And above all, the game is not that greedy. I was able to run it on a mid-range tablet.
A fighting game on tablets, it's true that it can make you smile. After all why not. And finally, it works pretty well. Even if the lack of combos and advanced controls may be a bit off-putting, the game still requires good reflexes and good timing.
Still, to be completely frank, the game is primarily aimed at fans of the Marvel universe. The others may pass their turn quickly, even if this Marvel Contest of Champions is still worth a try.
